An independent press guaranteed by the First Amendment, is one of the essential pillars of our republic. That is how we started. A group of Toquerville residents decided a local citizen blog might benefit our city.* A sentinel keeps watch and that is how we landed on our name.

While he was Minister to France in Paris, Thomas Jefferson wrote in 1787 “…were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.”

The Toquerville Sentinel has no desire to be a “newspaper without government.”  We are grateful for the local government and elected officials who serve our community.

At the same time, following Jefferson’s advice, we hope our efforts will assist in making our residents aware of local government activity and assist in allowing a more informed dialogue within our community.  Our goal is to help safeguard our beautiful city.
